Hypnotherapy Explained
Insomnia – sleeplessness – poor sleep – the words really don’t show how rotten it is if you feel you don’t sleep very well. Our poor bodies – and more importantly, our poor minds – simply weren’t designed to deal with the amount of stress we have to cope with now, or the non-stop treadmill most people find themselves on. Insomnia and poor sleep are often the result.

How much sleep do we need
We don’t all need the same amount of sleep, but if you consistently wake up to the alarm clock, it would indicate that you’re not getting enough sleep for you. When we’ve slept a healthy amount, we wake up naturally, and feel a lot better for it.
Worrying about insomnia and sleeplessness
Not being able to get to sleep, either when you go to bed or if you wake in the night, is irritating and stressful in its own right. It often seems that the minute you go to bed, having snoozed through the last 15 minutes of that programme you REALLY wanted to see, your mind suddenly wakes up and starts having a party. And while most people with insomnia do actually sleep more than they think they do, the continual stress and worry about NOT sleeping is very unhelpful.
Hypnotherapy for insomnia
Hypnotherapy for insomnia is about relaxation, as that’s pretty much what hypnotherapy is based on. It will include positive suggestions and ideas for sleeping better, and for waking up refreshed in the morning. You’ll also be given a recording to listen to as you prepare for sleep, and this can be wonderfully effective. Hypnotherapy can also help you to find out why you are sleeping badly. Our adult habits, beliefs and values are often created in childhood. In hypnosis, we can look at the reasons behind unwanted habits, such as sleeping badly, with all the adult wisdom and experience you now have. This can bring understanding and resolution, and can help to usher in a new era of good sleeping habits.
Sleep hygiene
Consistent good sleep hygiene can help. This includes:
- going to bed at a regular time
- making sure the room is cool and quiet, and as dark as you can make it.
- turning off your technology at least an hour before going to bed
- using a real alarm clock instead of your phone
- avoiding caffeine and alcohol too close to bed time
- only using the bedroom for sleep and sex
Techniques to help you sleep better.
There are many effective techniques which can improve your sleep, but you have to practise them. All habits are built by repetition. Your sleeping habits, good and bad, are no different. Insomnia and poor sleep is a habit which can be changed, but it takes practise.
Gratitude Attitude
To quieten your mind, think about 10 things in your life that you’re grateful for. Variations can be 5 lovely things that have happened that day – as simple as a lovely compliment, hearing birdsong, having someone smile at you. None of these things need to be enormous, but if you search your memory for lovely things, you can’t worry about why you’re not asleep.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Starting at your head, focus on your closed eyelids. Notice how they feel – notice whether they feel the same or different – perhaps one is more relaxed already than the other? – simply become aware of how they feel, and then just allow them to relax.
Continue to focus on each part of your body in turn, each time noticing how it feels, and then allowing it to relax. If you get distracted, just bring your focus back to the part of the body you were aware of last, and allow it to relax. Most people never get to their toes.
Ratio, or 7/11, breathing
This is great for bringing peace and calm to your mind. Simply breathe in through your nose for the count of 7, and breathe out through your nose for the count of 11. If 7/11 doesn’t suit you, find your own ideal rhythm – perhaps 5/8, or 3/6 – whatever is right for you. Just remember – breathe out for longer than you breathe in. Do this for 5 minutes to bring control back to your breathing and to calm your mind

Insomnia
“I have thus far had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Pat and slowly but surely it is transforming my life! I had experienced hypnotherapy before and found it helpful to a point, but Pat’s session have exceeded my expectations. I suppose the way it differed from my previous sessions is that, for every session we’ve had, she has made me a personal recording to take home to which I can listen any time. It is the repetition of listening as well as having a therapy ‘crutch’ to take home which is just so beneficial. I have noted vast improvements in my confidence, even though this wasn’t even the main issue I came to see her for.”
